Northbound: Lake Views by Holly Taylor

When I saw Holly Taylor’s Lake Views line, I knew I wanted to design a quilt for my dad. He is a pro fisherman who loves to trout fish. Since I have also been wanting to make another layer cake friendly pattern, I sat down and designed Northbound. When talking with other quilters, we all agree that layer cakes are a great way to use all of the fabrics in the line in your quilt. However, most patterns cut up the 10 in. squares into small pieces so you can’t see much of the fabric design. When designing this pattern, I wanted the star to be big enough to showcase the fabric’s design, especially since most fabric lines have at least one large print design.

Northbound Quilt Pattern can be purchased in the Yellow Umbrella Quilts shop.

Northbound has been one of my favorite quilts to photograph! The colorways in the Lake Views line complimented the late summer colors in Lanesboro, MN.

My parents and I took my daughter to Preston, MN to photograph the Northbound quilt while my dad trout fished.

The best part about this test quilt is that everyone in my family helped make this quilt in some fashion! My mom and I worked together to make the blocks. She made the ones with the white background and I made the green background blocks. When my mom first started her long arm quilt business, my dad would design custom quilting designs for each of their customer’s quilt. He designed this Minnesota quilting design years ago. I wanted to use it so that everyone could play a part in the making of this test quilt.

Northbound can be purchased in the Yellow Umbrella Quilts Shop.
