How to Get Started in Quilting
If you’re here, then you too must have been swept up in the artistic world of quilting! At Yellow Umbrella Quilts, we get it. Who doesn’t want to make their own beautiful blankets that can be sold, donated, gifted, and enjoyed at home? That’s why we created this short guide to the essential quilting tools you need to start your journey. Check them out!
Sewing Machine
The first hurdle to overcome as a new quilter is the sewing machine. With a variety of features and a wide range of prices, finding the right sewing machine can be a daunting task. But we have good news! You don’t need the most expensive and complicated machine available. Head to the nearest department store and grab something simple. Better yet, stop by your grandma’s house and see if she has one you can borrow. This way, you can see if you’re going to like this hobby before making a big investment into it. Once you’re more experienced, you can shop around and snag a floor model that is being replaced by a newer one for a discounted price!
Fabric and Batting
It’s okay to save money on the sewing machine, but you’re going to want to spend a little more on quality fabric. Nothing is more disheartening than watching your first quilt slowly come apart after a gentle cycle in the washer. That’s why you should only buy fabric and batting from genuine quilt shops rather than big box stores. My favorites are Fat Quarter Shop and Missouri Star Quilt Company.
Rulers
Getting the right size cut is a major part of making a good quilt. This is why you’ll find experienced quilters with a whole arsenal of different types of rulers. But for beginners, a few good rulers will go a long way. The most important thing is to make sure they don’t slip while you’re making your cut. Quilters Select non-slip rulers are my go-to to ensure my cuts are accurate.
Scissors and Rotary Cutters
Scissors and rotary cutters are both great for cutting fabric, although they each have different jobs. Scissors can be used for cutting fabric from a bolt, however, they are mostly used for trimming threads. Rotary cutters have lots of different blade sizes, and its “pizza cutter” design makes cutting fast and easy. With a mat and ruler, rotary cutters make fabric cuts quick and precise.
With these basic tools, your quilting journey can begin! Now the only thing left is to find a pattern. Head over to the Yellow Umbrella Quilts online shop to find patterns that are both beautiful and perfect for beginners!
