Fabric Requirements
For this size table runner pattern, all you need is:
- (12) 5 in. squares, cut in half.
- 1/4 yard of background fabric.
- 1/2 yard of backing fabric.
- 1/4 yard of binding, I used (3) 2 1/4 in. x WOF strips.
- 15.5 in. x 35.5 in. of batting, I sewed a couple scraps of batting together.
Getting Started
Begin by cutting print fabric into (24) 2.5 in. x. 5 in. rectangles. Then, from the background, cut (3) 1 in. x WOF strips. Subcut into (22) 1 in. x 5 in. rectangles. Cut (1) 1 in. x 31 in. rectangle and set aside for sashing. Cut (2) 1.5 in. x WOF strips, subcut into (2) 1 in. x 31 in. rectangles, and set aside for borders. Lastly, cut (1) 1.5 in. x WOF strip, then subcut into (2) 1 in. x 12 in. rectangles and set aside for borders.
Sewing the Blocks
Start by sewing a 1 in. x 5 in. background rectangle in between (2) 2.5 in. x 5 in. print rectangles, as shown below. Make (12) blocks.
Once your (12) blocks are assembled, sew a 1 in. x 5 in. sashing rectangle between each block. Rotate each block 90 degrees, as shown below. Sew (6) blocks in each row, with a 1 in. x 31 in. sashing strip between the two rows. Add the 1.5 in. x 31 in. borders to the top and bottom. Complete your runner by stitching the 1.5 in. x 12 in. borders to each end. See the diagram below.
Finishing Up Your Runner
Using some leftover backing from my Charming Pirouette Quilt pattern, I layered the Turn of Spring table runner top, sandwiching some leftover batting in between.
Using a walking foot, I quilted this table runner by stitching in the ditch.
To stitch in the ditch, sew right on the seams of where two pieces of fabric meet.
Once you have quilted and finished squaring up your table runner, it is time to bind! Here is a super simple binding tutorial for beginners.
