What is a Fat Eighth

Yellow Stitching

A fat eighth is a piece of fabric that measures 9” x 21”. This is in comparison to a regular eighth yard of fabric which measures 4 ½“ x 42”. Fat eighths are versatile and commonly used for smaller quilt projects, quilt patchwork, and other projects.

Can I use Fat Eighths for Larger Quilting Projects?

While fat eighths are ideal for smaller projects, they may not provide enough fabric for larger quilts or projects that require larger cuts. However, they can be combined with quilt patchwork to create a unique design for your quilt. Consider using fat eighths as accent pieces in your quilt design.

Are Fat Eighths Suitable for Beginners?

Yes, fat eighths can be an excellent choice for beginners due to their manageable size and versatility. The quilted patchwork allows beginners to experiment with different fabric combinations.

Can I Cut My Own Fat Eighths?

Yes! Begin with a yard of fabric. Then cut the fabric in half twice. Once you have four pieces of fabric,  start measuring and marking a 9-inch width. Cut along the marked line to create a strip. Next, measure 21 inches along the strip and cut perpendicular to the width. This leaves you with a perfect fat eighth!
